Abstract

Diabetes mellitus requires continuous management that depends not only on medical therapy, but also on the patient’s ability to perform self-care. This community service program aimed to improve participants’ knowledge, skills, and acceptance of mudra practice as a complementary therapy for people with diabetes mellitus. The program was conducted in Sumberporong Village, Lawang District, Malang Regency, East Java, involving 15 participants with diabetes mellitus selected through purposive sampling. The method used was participatory health education through counseling, demonstration, direct practice, pretest, posttest, practice observation, and participant response assessment. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequency and percentage. The results showed an increase in participants’ knowledge after the education session. Before the program, 53.3% of participants were in the moderate knowledge category and 46.7% were in the poor category. After the program, 86.7% of participants reached the good category and 13.3% remained in the moderate category. Most participants were also able to practice mudra, including sitting comfortably, following instructions, imitating hand positions, regulating breathing, and performing the exercise independently. Participants showed a highly positive response, with 100% stating that the program was beneficial, 93.3% reporting that mudra was easy to perform, and 86.7% expressing interest in continuing the practice at home. This program indicates that education and mudra practice can serve as a simple, low-cost, safe, and practical complementary approach to support community-based health education for people with diabetes mellitus.
