Application of Bay Leaf Decoction and Foot Exercises Can Stabilize Blood Glucose Levels: A Case Study

Abstract

Blood glucose instability refers to the variation where blood glucose levels rise or fall from the normal range. Unstable blood glucose levels, if not properly managed, combined with an unhealthy lifestyle, can lead to complications such as stroke, coronary heart disease, heart failure, diabetic ulcers, and even death. The purpose of this study is to provide boiled bay leaves and foot exercises to diabetic clients to stabilize blood glucose levels. This qualitative research uses a case study approach involving one respondent with type 2 diabetes mellitus, who meets the inclusion criteria of being older than 45 years, conscious and cooperative, showing signs of unstable blood glucose levels characterized by FBG values ≥126 mg/dl, HbA1c levels ≥6.5%, having diabetes for 5-10 years, and willing to participate by signing informed consent. The interventions applied were hyperglycemia management through the provision of boiled bay leaves, foot exercises, 3J diet education, and self-monitoring of blood glucose levels. The results showed that on the first day before the intervention, fasting blood glucose levels were 170 mg/dl (morning) and after the intervention were 251 mg/dl (afternoon). After 7 days of intervention, blood glucose levels became 104 mg/dl (morning) and 118 mg/dl (afternoon) with a reduction in hyperglycemia symptoms. The importance of consistent and compliant diabetes mellitus management can influence blood glucose stability and reduce the risk of complications.
