Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin effectively, resulting in increased blood sugar levels. Therefore, dietary management is very important in controlling blood glucose and preventing complications in patients with Type 2 DM. Blood glucose control in patients with Type 2 DM can be achieved by implementing DM management regularly. One of the treatments is to replace the consumption of high-calorie sweeteners with low-calorie sweeteners for DM patients so that patients can still consume sweet foods but not increase their blood sugar levels significantly. Low-calorie sweeteners like stevia are widely used as sugar substitutes by both diabetics and non-diabetics. For this reason, researchers wanted to find out the impact of using stevia sweeteners on blood sugar levels in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients. This paper is qualitative research with 2 respondents, conducted on March 3–10, 2024, to know how blood sugar changes before and after the use of stevia sweeteners. This research uses interview and observation techniques. The results showed that the respondent's blood sugar level after using stevia sweetener in 2 hours decreased. Based on this research, the use of stevia sweetener as a substitute for cane sugar can be an option for people with Diabetes Mellitus in controlling blood sugar levels.
